Nancy Pilcher wins Australian Fashion Laureate 2015

23rd October 2015 – The annual Australian Fashion Laureate awards were held in Sydney at an exclusive luncheon held by IMG Fashion for Australia’s leading fashion players.  A who’s who of the Australian fashion industry met over lunch at Opera House Marquee with sweeping views of Sydney Harbour.  This year international guest of honour, Suzy Menkes (fashion authority and VOGUE International Editor) was in attendance and happily chatting to all. 

“I feel honoured to be in Sydney to be able to be a part of presenting these awards to such deserving designers and icons within the Australian Fashion Industry”, says Suzy Menkes, on attending the event. 

The well-respected well loved icon in Australian fashion, Nancy Pilcher was awarded the Laureate in recognition for her contribution to the industry, through her former roles as Editor-in-Chief for VOGUE Australia and Vice-President of Editorial Development in the Asia Pacific region for Conde Nast. Integral in the establishment of Australian Fashion Week in 1996, Nancy has been exemplary in her efforts to champion the Australian fashion industry on a domestic and international level throughout her career.

The highly popular editor paid a special tribute to her mentors in her speech, as well as making an announcement she was sharing the Laureat award with 8th time Australian Fashion Laureate nominee Nicholas Huxley.

Huxley is Head of Fashion Design Studio, with the college entering into its first year as a university degree and has produced some of Australia’s leading talents in fashion such as Bianca Spender, Alex Perry, Dion Lee,  Lisa Ho, Luke Sales and Anna Plunket (the duo from Romance was Born),  Akira Isogawa, Jenny Kee, Michael Lo Sordo, Christopher Esber amongst many other leading Australian fashion designers.

For a second year, the Australian Fashion Laureate award categories were extended to encompass Womenswear, Menswear, Retailer and Emerging Designer. 

 “I am immensely privileged to shine a spotlight on this year’s industry elected Australian fashion icons and 2015 Laureate recipient, Nancy Pilcher” said Emily Weight, Director of Strategy and Brand, IMG Fashion.

“It is through their dedication, creativity and passion that the Australian fashion industry’s global profile is so strong. We were delighted to have Suzy Menkes in Sydney to recognise and celebrate the diverse creativity in Australian fashion, on the precipice of the evolution of Fashion Week in Australia.”

Now in its eighth year, the Australian Fashion Laureate celebrates professionals whose careers have promoted and advanced the Australian fashion industry internationally and is truly a distinct honour as they are voted for by a panel of industry peers.  Nancy Pilcher joins the likes of previous Laureate winners including Nicky and Simone Zimmermann of Zimmermann, Jenny Kee, Collette Dinnigan, Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson of Easton Pearson, Carla Zampatti, Akira Isogawa as well as Simon Lock, the founder of Australian Fashion Week.

 An IMG initiative, supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, this was the first time the Australian Fashion Laureate was orchestrated as a stand-alone event, outside of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
