David Jones have recently added to their list of overseas designer brands with the signing of Richard Nicoll. The British based designer will be heading to David Jones next month in March. Raised in Perth, Richard Nicoll was initially trained in menswear, but it’s in womenswear he has found his foray.
Nicoll has been awarded three Association Nationale de Association Nationale pour le Développement des Arts de la Mode prizes. He was named “Best Young Designer” at the Elle Style Awards in 2009 as well as being a BFC Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist.
Adding to those accolades is also including freelancing design for Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton (SS05 collection), as well as creative direction at Cerrutti Paris womenswear.
Interestingly despite the fast fashion overseas chain stores hitting Australia, it’s the international womenswear designer section which is showing thriving sales for David Jones.
David Jones General Manager Womenswear Sophie Clark said, “Our international women’s designer business has grown by 55.6% over the three year period from FY11 to FY13 and we continue to see real opportunities for growth in this sector.”
Clarke also illustrates the importance of the internet for brand recognition sell through for the David Jones customers going on to further state, “Our customers are well travelled and the internet has given them instantaneous online access to the international shows. This means that they are familiar with many international designers before they are available in Australia. Richard Nicoll is a case in point, with demand already existing amongst our customers for this designer.”
