The annual anticipated Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) ran from the 13th May to the 17th May. The opening night was awarded to brother and sister duo, Camilla and Marc, who also celebrated 15 years in business and turned their show into a scene reminiscent of Mars.
As always it’s a marathon week of fashion. While it’s no doubt Australia has talent on a world-class scale, this year many collections were a mixed bag.
Some were highly commercial with a less wow factor, while others seemed confused about who their actual customer was. I can’t help but wonder and feel if the pressure of retail and the unstable retail climate is having an effect on some collections. Or is it just exhaustion? Some just felt too safe. While I don’t pretend it’s easy to design a new range year after year. However, one thing which is paramount, with the current retail climate as it is, it’s time fashion labels need to push harder and be the best they can be to wow their buyers. Quite simply if buyers don’t love your collection, in many instances, they don’t buy it again regardless of sell through.
It’s not exactly that any were particularly bad, but some were just unmemorable and just failed to excite.
The list below however surprised, delighted and showed not only a thorough understanding of the customer but understood what their customer loved and showcased their passion for excellence.
Bravo to these fashion players for striving to the best they can be.
